SAD GOODBYES
Many members will be sorry to learn of the death of Maurice Newman from a heart attack, at the age of only 63.
Maurice became known to us when, around thirty years ago, he purchased Daimler CVD6 JOJ 707 from WMPTE for preservation. Nowadays we are so used to associating Birmingham ‘Standards’ with Gardner-engined Daimlers and Guys that 2707 may seem an odd choice. In fact the CVD6, with Daimler’s own CD6 engine, outnumbered all other types in Birmingham’s post-war fleet with a total of 438 being purchased. Although it is many years since Maurice sold 2707 on, it is thanks to his foresight that this very typical Birmingham bus exists.
Maurice faded from the bus scene somewhat after 2707 and it was a surprise to me when I joined WMPTE’s rail section to find his name was a legend amongst my colleagues at British Rail Provincial Services, later Central Trains. For an enthusiast (and sharp end employee) to enjoy such a reputation amongst the professionals tells volumes about this affable man. His railway knowledge and experience was vast yet his lovely slow talking manner never gave you a feeling of inferiority. One of those chaps it was always a pleasure to encounter, we will miss him.
More sad news was to hear of the passing at the grand age of 97 years of Stella Trigg, wife of the late E. V. (‘Ernie’) Trigg. The Trigg family was associated with the bus industry in Birmingham from the very earliest days of motorbuses. Mr Trigg was a keen supporter of the 1685 Group and BaMMOT, and the delightful Stella often accompanied him. Our thoughts go to the Trigg family and also to Audrey and Phil Hoole who knew Stella very closely.
