D9: LAST CHANCE TO THE MALVERNS
Even before the first Events Day in 2002, D9 5399 will be active. The Malverns are a popular destination and, in years gone by, Midland Red's 144 route was the way to get there, employing double-deck buses to get maximum benefit of the scenery. This is now in the past and the trees are now encroaching. We intend to withdraw 5399 for repaint after Easter, after which we will not dare take it to Malvern because the trees will damage the new paintwork. Our tour on 24th March 2002 will thus be your last chance to ride 5399 to the Malverns for a generation. The tour will also take in Evesham and Broadway. Hopefully the weather will be kind; it should be a splendid way to greet the arrival of Spring.
5399 will leave the museum at 11.00 and make a further pick-up in central Birmingham at 11.30 from Hill Street (stop Hh, near Navigation Street). Lunch and afternoon refreshment breaks will be taken. We anticipate returning about 6.00. The fare is £8 for adults, reduced to £4 for children (5-16 years). Seats can be booked by writing to the museum with your name, address, phone number just in case something goes wrong), choice of boarding point and, of course, your payment.
2002 enthusiasts' route tour will take place on 23rd June 2002 and a major incursion into Shropshire is being planned. The route will require a single-decker and it is hoped that S23 5956 will have achieved class 6 status to permit its use. Otherwise last year's tour choice, S16 5545, will be used. More details to follow.
